Had a chuckle today as I was searching for navigation options
for my Galaxy S Android phone. While searching I cam across this
thread dedicated to the availability of offline maps for the google
navigation software -

EDIT: I see SAGNS has updated and improved their website since
this article (edited: 15 September 2009)
A while back, while working on a rural settlements database, we
were asked to consider the SAGNS database as a reference for
settlement names. The data that we received was, to put it mildly,
very poor. Locations were in the sea, in the northern hemisphere,
in South America and for 50% of the database - nowhere at all.
added to that, the alphanumeric data was full of mistakes a.....

Planning and development, as a function of local government, is
experiencing difficulties in KwaZulu-Natal as a province of South
Africa. This is mainly due to the critical shortage of experience
and skills, lack of up to date information and limited recognition
of the importance of this function in government.
This discussion focuses on the question of information
management and accessibility and identifies a concept which could

A while back, particularly with the introduction of Microsoft
MapPoint, it was commonly believed that the need for GIS
specialists would diminish, and a GIS package would be used just
like an office product. Pre-configured datasets would be readily
available, and products would come integrated with mapping and
basic spatial analysis. In a way, that has happened to a certain
extent, but the need for specialist analysts has not waned as was

"Cannot map metafile into memory. Not Enough Memory" -
does that look familiar? There is certainly a lot of literature
about on the net. So what does it mean?. Well according to the
ESRI:
"When ArcMap prints or exports to any
format, an EMF file is created. Windows attempts to allocate enough
memory to read the entire EMF metafile. If it cannot allocate a
large enough contiguous block of memory, Windows returns a NULL or
'0' EMF handle, and ArcMap displays the error
message."
